For more than 50 years bassoon and contrabassoon reeds manufactured by Windeler have been
a guarantee for quality and consistency. Hermann Windeler, a bassoon player for the
Opern und Museumsorchester Frankfurt am Main, founded this company back in 1955 and since
then it has acquired a worldwide reputation for its bassoon reeds.
With incredible inventiveness and ingenious ambition, he continued to
perfect the production of the reed (still then in its infancy) that we know today.
After his death, the business was run by his wife for a few months.
If Hermann Windeler's son Reinhard, bassoon player with the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra,
had not built the firm up again in 1983, the complete knowledge which had
been accumulated would have been lost. Due to ill health in 2006, Reinhard Windeler
decided to pass the production on to me after giving me a thorough introduction into the
work and background of the company.
I was born in Baden-Baden and was priviledged to have my first bassoon lessons
at the age of 13 years with Helmut Böcker and Bernd Andres, both bassoon players with
the SWF Symphony Orchestra in Baden-Baden.
I studied in Mannheim at the Musikhochschule under the leadership of
Professor Alfred Rinderspacher. At this time I also took lessons with
Thomas Held, solo bassoon player with the Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover.
After my university studies in Mannheim, I passed through soloist level under
the leadership of Oscar Bohorquez at the Musikhochschule Aachen.
Both university courses were passed with excellence. My commencement in
orchestras began with a work placement for one year at the SWF Symphony Orchestra
After several short term contracts with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Kiel,
the Philharmonic Orchestra in Baden-Baden and the Symphony Orchestra in Wuppertal,
I was offered the position of second bassoon player with the Philharmonic Orchestra
in Freiburg. After successfully passing the trial year, I relocated to the Lower
Saxony State Orchestra in Hanover in 1997 in the same position and this is
where I am still employed.
Best regards, Nicolas Müller (company owner)
